Flood preparedness reviewed in Assam

As the spring time rains start pouring in Assam, the government steps up flood preparedness in the State.
The Sarbananda Sonowal government at Dispur has already directed the water resources department and other line agencies to remain fully prepared to tackle the onslaught of seasonal floods.
Assam and some parts of northeast India continue experiencing flood due to torrential rain in the region.
Massive loss of paddy, infrastructure, cattle and human lives is always reported during the rainy season.
Reviewing the flood preparedness of the concerned department in presence of its minister Keshab Mahanta recently Sonowal took stock of the strength of the embankments that were essentially created to serve as a deterrent against the waves of flood.
It may be noted that under the present dispensation a total of 12.02 km embankments were constructed as against only 0.60 km during the last two years of the previous Congress government at Dispur.
The new government has already raised and strengthened 103 km of embankments.
During the same period 44 anti-erosion and town protection works were completed as against only 28 during the last two years of the previous government, claimed a government communiqu�.
Sonowal asked the department to complete all relevant schemes on a war footing.
Besides, the embankments that fall under the purview of Panchayat and rural development, he asked the official concerned to forge synergy among P&RD, water resources department and district magistrates.
