Imphal, October 14 2018:
Chief Conservator of Forest Mahendra Pratap has conveyed that every 9 hours, a species goes extinct in the world.
He made the statement during the release of 'Kallo Lao Eibu', a song dedicated to protecting and conserving wildlife, at Maharaja Chandrakriti auditorium, Palace Compound today.
The event which was organised by Unique Wildlife Protection Committee, Manipur, was also graced by Conservator of Forest L Joykumar Singh, film maker Oken Amakcham, Divisional Forest Officer, Central Forest Division RK Amarjit and president, Unique Wildlife Protection Committee, Manipur, as presidium members.
Speaking at the event where a website www.uwlpc.org was also launched, Mahendra Pratap explained that it is estimated that earth has around 13.5 million species of animals but the number is steadily declining due to the deterioration of the natural environment.
It is calculated that a species goes extinct every 9 hours.
As such, it is imperative for human beings to work for conserving the environment, he added.
He continued that plants and animals are all integral part of the ecosystem and without them, humans cannot survive as well.
Killing of all other living creatures is the same as cutting off one's own feet, he remarked.
On the other hand, L Joykumar said that many birds from snow clad regions of Russia and Siberia are beginning to migrate to Loktak Lake.
These birds travel more than a thousand kilometres to escape the cold.
Hundreds usually die during such trips, he explained and appealed to all not to lay traps for the birds or to kill them.
It may be mentioned that Unique Wildlife Protection Committee Manipur was established in 2009 at Sekmaijin with the aim of spreading awareness and taking up various initiatives for protecting and saving various birds, animals and even the Sangai in and around Loktak Lake.
Releasing of the cassette of Kallo Lao Eibu, sung by renowned singer Pushparani and various other entertainment programmes were the prime attractions of the event today.
