Imphal, July 12 2018:
In an incident that is as bizarre and shocking, a student of Catholic School, Canchipur, who secured the 4th position in this year's HSLC Examination conducted by Board of Secondary Education (BOSEM) has been found scoring more marks than even the 1st position holder after it came to light that she (the student) had scored 8 more marks.
Speaking to media persons at DESAM office at Sagolband Popular Upper Primary School today, its secretary general Sheetal Oinam said that Archana Hijam (Roll No 44157 of Catholic School, Canchipur), who secured the 4th position in the HSLC examination, filed an RTI application due to doubt about the marks she secured in the exam and her position and it was found that there was a huge inconsistency in the mark she obtained and the mark she was given.
Sheetal continued that DESAM received a complaint regarding the issue and as follow-up, the association analysed the answer script provided with the RTI along with experts and teachers and it was found that 4 marks each were left to be given for Science and English subjects.
It may be mentioned that the student who secured the 1st position scored 573 marks.
If the additional marks were to be added, Archana would have score 577 marks in total, which is four marks higher than that of the 1st position holder, he added.
When DESAM approached BOSEM Chairman and the Controller regarding the error, they both tried to shift the blame by claiming that they just announced the marks/results which were provided by the Head Examiner and the examiners, Sheetal alleged and condemned the officials for failing to take responsibility for the error.
The secretary general continued that DESAM suspects as well as believe that if the answer scripts of all the students from the 1st to the 25th position are sent for re-scrutiny, the order of the position holders will shift greatly.
Claiming that there have been many instances of error during the recent examination, Sheetal narrated an incident when a student sent in his paper for re-examination and initially BOSEM declared the result of the re-examination as no change.
But after some time, on the same day itself, the student was informed by BOSEM that his marks were wrong and that he had passed the examination, Sheetal claimed.
The secretary general conveyed that students are always the victims of such carelessness by the examiner and the Head Examiner and according to DESAM, this is a huge failure on the part of BOSEM.
Demanding BOSEM to award the pending marks to Archana Hijam, Sheetal stated that the Chairman in-charge, Secretary, Controller and the officials in the examination section should all bear the responsibilities for this grave mistake.
The Board should bring a swift conclusion to this issue, he demanded.
