Chakkouba fair begins at GM hall

A Ningol Chakkouba Festive Fair organised by Kabrabam Handloom Cluster, Thangmeiband under the aegis of District Industries Centre, Imphal West commenced from today at GM Hall.
Speaking as chief guest of the Fair inauguration programme Principal Secretary of Commerce & Industries O Nabakishore Singh appealed to the people of Manipur to present locally produced handloom items as gifts to the sisters/daughters on the day of one of the grandest festivals in the State.
He also opined that Ningol chakkouba and Cheiraoba festivals provide opportunity to the local weavers/artisans to promote their produces as well as sustain and develop the age-old cottage industries of the Manipuris.
The Principal Secretary further pointed out that apart from these festivals helping the local weavers preserve the age-old tradition, handloom and handicraft products also have high demand outside manipur.
As functional president, Commerce & Industries director V Taulthang stressed on active role of local artisans in preserving and promoting handloom and handicraft industries in the State.
In order to develop local handloom and handicraft sector, the Commerce and Industries Department is working with the weavers/artisans in organising various festival-related fairs, he said while conveying that fairs such as the one inaugurated today is being organised to facilitate the general public purchase handloom items at affordable rates.
Imphal West District industries Centre's General Manager T Rajen Singh graced the occasion as the guest of honour.
Products of local weavers/artisans are being put on display in 40 stalls at the fair.
The Ningol Chakkouba will be celebrated on October 28 .
