Imphal, March 02 2013 :
At the initiative of Chief Minister O Ibobi who is also in charge of Power Department, power supply to 150 electric transformers has been cut off in his home district.
Power supply to the 150 transformers was cut off as electric consumers residing in the areas covered by the transformers were not paying power bills regularly or not paying at all, conveyed an official source.
It is said that the new drive to cut off power supply to transformers where majority of the consumers were not paying bills would be carried out in other districts too apart from Thoubal.
Another measure taken up by the department to enhance revenue collection is installation of meters for mobile phone towers operating in the State and bulk consumers.
The department has already served show cause notices to some Executive Engineers under whose jurisdictions power meters were not installed for bulk consumers, informed the official source.
Between January and February during which 75 per cent of the power bill surcharge indebted to consumers were waived off, the department collected Rs 50 lakhs as power bill.
However, the Government has not taken any decision whether the incentive scheme would be extended or not.
Notably, the Government has already decided to set two companies, Discom and Holdco after converting Electricity Department into a corporation.
