12 hours State-wide general strike ends

Imphal, March 31 2012:
The 12 hours State-wide general strike called by Maoist Communist Party, Manipur in protest against the killing of two handymen by setting ablaze a stationary bus at Keishampat has ended without any major untoward incident.
On account of the general strike, Khwairamband Keithel and other commercial centres of Imphal bore a deserted look.
Most of the shops remained shut.
Volume of vehicular traffic at Imphal and other district headquarters was drastically reduced.
All inter-district bus services as well as other passenger carriers stayed off roads.
Likewise, inter-State bus services suspended their daily service today.
However, tourist buses and goods carriers heading for Imphal from other States reached here in the evening after the general strike ended.
However, the general strike had little impact in hill districts.
As such, normal activities continued unaffected in all commercial centres and market places of hill districts.
Even as educational institutions were opened today, attendance of students was minimal because of the general strike.
Attendance in Government offices was also lower than other days.
Air service was not affected.
Preempt any subversive activities during the general strike, additional security forces were deployed in greater Imphal areas and all suspected places.
