Shillong, March 30 2010:
Four Students of St.
Edmund's School has been produced before the Juvenile Justice Board headed by Principle Magistrate, A.Nikhla on Tuesday in connection with an arson case in the school Sunday last.
Speaking to reporters here, DSP (Crime) Vivek Syiem said that the boys poured petrol into the room through the ventilator before setting it on fire in the wee hour of Sunday.
Describing the group as 'a bunch of disgruntled students', the DSP (Crime) said, "The students decided to vandalise school property on flimsy grounds.
According to sources the boys took this extreme step after they were not selected to participate in sport activities.
Syiem informed that the boys are in the age group of 15-16 years and from various classes.
"At first glance these students look docile.
They betrayed the crime they committed," Syiem said.
He also informed that from the crime site a 'C2J' sign was found inscribed, which suggests that the boys were inspired by gang culture prevalent in the west.
Meanwhile the DSP (Crime) said that he took up the case as top priority and therefore police was able to crack the case within a shot span of time.
"We took up the case expeditiously so that such cases do not recur in future" .
Alarmed at the audacity of the youngsters who committed such a heinous crime, the DSP (Crime) said, "I am surprised as to how they could procure a car, mobile and alcohol without their parents keeping a check on their movements," adding that it seemed the boys had a lot of 'free time'.
Urging parents to spend quality time with their children, Syiem said, "Nowadays parents are caught up with their own lives, to compensate they splurge on their kids with materials things when in fact they should monitor them through parental education at home" .
He also added that the parents of the boys could not have visualised that their sons could have done
such a thing.
