Life bid on Up-Adhyaksha foiled

The Up-Adhyaksha of Imphal West district Chanam Ongbi Bijenti of Ngairangbam Makha Leikai had a providential escape from the jaws of death when people of the locality came to her rescue from a bid on her life by unidentified armed persons who barged into her house on the night of August 22 .
Decrying the incident, a protest demonstration was staged at the community hall of Ngairangbam today.
In connection with the life bid on her, Bijenti, who is also a member of Yurembam Zilla Parishad, informed that at around 7 pm of August 22, she was cooking in the kitchen of her Ngairangbam Makha residence when one unidentified armed person came from behind and pointed the gun on her back.
Taken aback, she screamed and one of her sons rushed in immediately and overpowered the armed intruder.
At that time, another armed intruder also sneaked inside and tried to prevent some of the local youths who were playing carrom in the corridor from entering by showing gun, Bijenti recalled.
Sensing danger, the two armed intruders immediately took to their heels and the local people chased after them.
But the armed intruders managed to escape, Bijenti added.
Bijenti further informed that in July, some people who identified themselves members of KCP (Taibanganba) group demanded Rs 5 lakh through telephone.
As the amount demanded was beyond her means, she did not concede.
As a result, her house was came under firing attack on the night of July 29 .
Bijenti, however, clarified that she does not know which UG group was involved in the life bid on the night of August 22 and none have come to claim the responsibility till date.
Meanwhile, protesting the life bid on Up-Adhyaksha, a large number of people coming from different parts of Ngairangbam, Yurembam and Konthoujam Gram Panchayats staged a Wakat Meepham jointly at the community hall of Ngairangbam today.
Placards inscribed with slogans like 'We demand to know why Imphal West Up-Adhyaksha Ch Bijenti is being targeted', 'The group responsible should come up with an explanation', 'We want peace', etc were used during the protest demonstration.
