ICAR celebrates National Mushroom Day

The National Mushroom Day that falls on December 23 every year was celebrated at ICAR, Manipur Centre today.
SC Srivastava, General Manager, NABARD, Imphal; RK Yaiphaba, AGM, NABARD, Imphal and Dr M Mahendra Singh, Retd Professor, RIMS, graced the function as chief guest and guests of honour.
Dr N Prakash, Joint Director of ICAR, Manipur Centre was the functional president.
The official logo of the Sidayai Chengum Producers Company was unveiled at the National Mushroom Day observance.
A small exhibition was also arranged and a discussion on "Mushrooms for nutrition and health" was conducted by Drs Arati Ningombam and SK Sharma.

About 40 mushroom growers and producers participated in the occasion and deliberated on the importance of mushrooms as quality foods and the scope and potential of mushroom cultivation.
SC Srivastava, General Manager, NABARD, promised to provide all possible help in capacity building and establishing marketing channel and supply chain to the mushroom producers.
He encouraged the growers to form companies to meet the challenges of marketing and to use latest technology in producing quality mushrooms.
He also pointed out that producers should aim for exporting processed mushroom products outside the State.
RK Yaiphaba, AGM, NABARD, spoke in length about how the Sidayai Chengum Producers Company was formed and also stressed on the importance of marketing of mushrooms so that producers get optimum price for their produce.
Dr M Mahendra Singh, Retd Professor RIMS, stressed on the importance of mushrooms as a good source of nutrients such as antioxidants and anti-aging.
He also pointed out the need for self-sufficiency in food production in the State.
He further deliberated on the importance of hard work, honesty and integrity in the functioning of the company to make it a successful venture.
Dr N Prakash, Joint Director, highlighted the role played by ICAR and its KVKs to train and popularize the farmers of Manipur in scientific cultivation of mushroom and spawn production.
He gave an insight into the importance of mushroom cultivation as an important component of Integrated Farming System and enhancing the farm income of farmers.
All the exhibitors were given certificate of participation while Temperate Mushroom Centre, Bimita Mushroom Centre and Integrated Mushroom Production Centre were adjudged the first, second and third in the exhibition of mushroom and value added products.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks delibered by Dr SS Roy of the ICAR.
