The Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) observed 'World Cancer Day' today in the Radiotherapy Department.
On this day, doctors and paramedics all over the world distribute blood, eatables, roses, etc to show that the cancer patients have not been neglected or forgotten.
Prof L Fimate, Director, Prof Tomcha, head of Radiotherapy, Prof Yambem Mohen, medical superintendent and many others visited the male and female wards of the Radiotherapy Department to distribute blood, refreshment packets, roses, etc.
Some other NGOs like the Manipur Cancer Society also came to the wards on this occasion.
Prof Fimate thanked the NGOs and volunteers who had donated blood to the blood bank of RIMS.
Without such donations it would not have been possible on the part of the RIMS authority to take care of the cancer patients, media advisor RIMS quoted the Director as saying in a statement.
Dr Bijoy, the Blood Bank officer said that a large number of volunteers and other organisations had come for blood donation.
He appealed to one and all to donate blood generously for the sake of the patients who are in need of blood transfusion.
On the other hand, he National Rose Day was observed under the aegis of the Manipur Cancer Society at Hotel Imphal today with Education Minister and president of the Manipur Cancer Society L Jayantakumar as chief guest and MLA Dr Kh Ratankumar as functional president.
A blood donation camp was also organised as a part of the observance.
Head of Radio Therapy and Regional Cancer Society RIMS Prof Th Tomcha presented slide shows and lecture on the origin of cancer and precautionary measures against cancer.
He informed that tobacco accounts for 70 to 80 percent of cancer infection.
There are about 1700 cancer patients in Manipur, said Secretary of Manipur Cancer Society Birendra Kangjam.
He lamented that cancer patients get little attention from the State Government.
On the other hand, a blood donation camp was organised by the S Kumar ACS Hospital Acupressure Research and Training cum Treatment Centre in collaboration with RIMS Blood Bank.
Altogether 32 volunteers donated blood during the camp.
