Imphal, December 21 2012:
Denouncing alleged callousness by authorities concerned to their demands, students of Indira Gandhi national Tribal university, Chingmeirong today burnt effigies of the university's Vice Chancellor and the Regional Director.
Speaking to newspersons on the sidelines of the protest demonstration, Students' union general secretary KT Lalnihring said that for the last two months the students have been urging varsity authorities to provide study materials, set up library and hostel for both male and female students, organise sports meet and conduct study tours.
Inspite of being fully aware that the students are facing severe inconveniences owing to absence of such basic infrastructure and repeated appraisals to vice Chancellor Prof CI Singh of IGNTU, Amarkanta headquarters there had been no positive response from authorities concerned, the secretary said.
Initially December 12 was set as the deadline for addressing the problems but the deadline was further extended to December 20 as neither the Vice Chancellor CI Singh nor IGNTU's Regional Director Vanlalngak made any concerted effort to solve the matter, Lalnihring maintained while adding that today's protest was a part of the students' movement to highlight their plight.
Further informing that the Regional Director assured this morning for all possible measures to solve the problems within 15 days, the secretary cautioned that in case there is no sign of positive action by January 7 the students' agitation would be intensified.
Strongly lamenting incompetency of the Regional Director to ensure congenial academic environment in the University, Lalnihring also alleged that despite sanctioning of Rs 23 crores for infrastructure development of the University under a special programme of the Prime Minister there is no visible sign of infrastructure development.
