Stepping up counter insurgency operations, combined team of Imphal East Commandos and Assam Rifles have apprehended four UG cadres and recovered huge cache of arms and ammunition in an offensive operation since yesterday.
With this latest catch, the total number of UGs arrested in the last two months by security forces involving Imphal East district police have crossed 70 mark.
Of the arrested four cadres, two belong to proscribed PREPAK and the other two to KCP (MC).
The two arrested PREPAK cadres have been identified as Huidrom Kumar alias Ibocha (48) s/o late Mani of Andro Khunou (Tarongthel) and Khunumayum Romesh alias Nilachandra (27) s/o Angou of Andro Machengpat while the two arrested KCP (MC) cadres as Meitankeishangbam Jiban alias Katung (28( s/o Priyokumar and Thokchom Sanayanba alias Apao (29) s/o Bame, both residents of Sabungkhok Makha Leikai.
Addressing a press conference in connection at the office of SP Imphal East today morning, Additional SP M Rajen said with instances of ransom demand, extortion and kidnapping on the rise in the last 2/3 months, encounter insurgency operation has been stepped up.
As a preventive as well as offensive measures, at least two counter insurgency operations are being launched at suspected places every week.
As part of these operations, a combined force of Imphal East Commandos and personnel of 29 Assam Rifles, Andro Post apprehended the two PREPAK cadres namely Huidrom Kumar alias Ibocha and Khunumayum Romesh alias Nilachandra yesterday and recovered two AK Rifles and 50 live ammunition from their possession.
During interrogation, it was confirmed that both of them are active members of PREPAK and they were involved in extorting money from Government officials, businessmen and general public, the Additional SP disclosed.
In continuation of the operation, a combined force of Imphal East Commandos and personnel of 23 Assam Rifles at Yaingangpokpi post also apprehended the two KCP (MC) cadres namely Meitankeishangbam Jiban alias Katung and Thokchom Sanayanba alias Apao from their respective residences at around 9.30 am today.
One point 33 pistol and four live round of ammunition were recovered from their possession, the Additional SP added.
