Workshop on organic farming held

Organic farming will be given special emphasis if BJP forms Government in the State in the next term, said Thangmeiband AC MLA Kh Joykishan while speaking as the chief guest at the opening function of a one-day workshop on organic farming held at Manipur Press Club today.
The workshop was organised by Dr Th Kishan Foundation and MIDAS Touch under the theme, 'A way to sustainable livelihood in Manipur' .
Social worker Indira Oinam, CEO of Directorate of Horticulture and Soil Conservation, Dr Devadutta Sharma and Regional Centre of Organic Farming Senior Scientist Dr V Pandey also attended the function as presidium members.
Joykishan said that people need to be more aware about organic farming and spread awareness to the people.
He also said that it is very important to give awareness about consuming vegetables, meat and fish containing fertilizer.
He also said that Manipur was considered as one of the healthy States in the past.
However, it is very fortunate that most of the people unknowingly consume hazardous chemicals due to rampant use of fertilizer by farmers now.
Joykishan also said that health care is one of the most important thing and daily physical exercise would not serve any purpose if people continue to consume unhealthy foods.
He also said that if the BJP comes to power in the next term, then the Government would give special emphasis to organic farming.
He said that incentives would be given to organic farmers.
In his a keynote address, Dr Devadutta said that organic farming is suitable with the present condition and regarding it various discussions have been held to adopt and implement it.
He also said that consumption of various food items including fish and meat which contain urea traces lead to diseases like Cancer, Diabetes, and hypertension etc.
Dry fish, Ngari and fermented bamboo shoots are hazardous to health nowadays as urea is widely used to ferment these food items, he said.
Government of India is looking forward to make the entire North East region as the hub of the organic farming, he said.
In the evening session, Dr V Pandey gave his lecture on the topic, 'Organic certification principal and procedure' .
