The team of Manipur Democratic Alliance (MDA) which went to Delhi to lobby for Presidential assent to the Manipur People Bill (MPB) has returned empty-handed.
Speaking to media persons at their Uripok office today, MDA convenor M Tombi said that they met BJP president Amit Shah and leaders of different political parties but they could meet neither Home Minister Rajnath Singh nor President Ram Nath Kovind.
Amit Shah reportedly told the MDA team that the Central Government could not do anything at the moment as the election model code of conduct is already in force.
The team met Lok Janshakti Party president Ram Vilas Paswan and highlighted the collective wish and aspirations of the people of Manipur.
Later, Ram Vilas Paswan talked with Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh about the Manipur People Bill which was passed by the Manipur Legislative Assembly on June 3, 2018.The Union Home Minister reportedly assured that a Union Cabinet meeting would be held after the Lok Sabha election and all possible assistance would be extended to the people of the North East, Tombi conveyed.
He said that the MDA would continue to exert pressure on the Central Government to grant Presidential assent to MPB, extend a special status to Manipur as enjoyed by Jammu and Kashmir and initiate concrete measures to protect the indigenous people of Manipur.
