Nagaland Govt moots re-writing of NMA

Kohima, June 15 2017: Nagaland Chief Minister, Dr.Sh�rhozelie Liezietsu today said that the state government is contemplating to re-write the Nagaland Municipal Act so that the election to the Urban Local Bodies could be conducted smoothly.

Speaking during the laying of foundation stone for the Kohima Municipal Council (KMC) building at Kezieke as the chief guest, the Chief Minister categorically stated that Nagaland government alone cannot be exempted or escape from the Municipal Act with women reservation since the 94th Amendment was passed by the Indian Parliament way back in the early 1990s.However, Dr.Sh�rhozelie said that since various civil societies have opposed the Nagaland Municipal Act, the government will re-amend the Act so that election to the ULB could be held and let the municipalities function accordingly.

The Chief Minster also said that people expect many developmental activities from the government but unless there is peace in our society, we cannot expect development to take place.

So, the chief minister called upon the people to maintain peace and march together in developing our state.

Mentioning the new site of the KMC building, Dr.Sh�rhozelie said that in future this will become the most important and happening site of the town as many developments will take place in the area.

He also assured that the state government will extent every possible assistance to construct the KMC building soon.

It may be mentioned here that the Central Executive Council of the NPF had a passed a resolution yesterday urging the State Government to set up a Consultative Committee comprising legal luminaries and to invite NGOs to solicit their views and opinions on the Nagaland Municipal Act, and pending holding of elections to the ULBs, to set up Advisory Committees in the ULBs so that the affairs of the ULBs can be handled by local leaders.

Earlier, the Administrator of KMC, Kethosituo Sekhose in his introductory speech expressed anguish over the anti-social elements that destroyed the whole of KMC building and its property at old MLA hostel building.

However, he expressed his gratefulness to the state government as well as the civil society for extending their help in setting up the new location for the KMC to function at URA academy for linguistic college.

He also thanked the state government for prompt action in locating and availing the new permanent site for the KMC building.

Parliamentary Secretary to the Municipal Affair, R Tohonba also gave a short speech.

The programme was chaired by Deputy Commissioner of Kohima, Rajesh Soundararajan (IAS) while Rev.Moa Longchari senior Pastor BMC invoked God's blessing during the programme.
