Imphal, May 15 2011:
Continuing the campaign for holding plebiscite as the only means for resolving the existing Manipur-India conflict, a public meeting was held at the community hall of Kangchup Chiru village today.
Organised under the aegis of Kangchup Chiru Women Development Society, the meeting held under the theme of 'Manipur-India conflict and its resolution through public participation' was attended by ex-chairman of Kangchup Chiru Women Development Society LS Lekochim and chief of Kangchup Chiru Akung Chiru as presidium members.
United People's Front (UPF), Manipur president Y Dhiren and Advocate S Prakash were among the main speakers who addressed the meeting
as resource persons.
Tracing the genesis of the conflict, Advocate Prakash said that Manipur was a sovereign Nation with a 2000 years old history of its own until the Government of India forcefully annexed it in 1949 .
This has led to the present conflict and the suffering of the people.
So, the suffering of the people can be overcome only through resolution of the conflict.
The people of Manipur, who have suffered for long on account of this conflict, should raise their voice as one in pressing the demand for holding plebiscite to resolve the conflict and to ensure their participation in the conflict resolution process. In his presidential address, chief of Kangchup Chiru village Akung Thanga Chiru pointed out that people in Manipur, both in the hills and the valley, used to live together as brother at one time happily and prosperously.
But from the moment Manipur was annexed, the Government of India has been adopting divide and rule policy to create enmity between the two brothers.
This fact should be understood clearly and make a joint effort to ensure Manipur regains its lost glory.
At the end of the meeting, two resolutions have been adopted unanimously.
The first resolution calls for holding plebiscite to ensure participation of the people in resolving the existing Manipur-India conflict, and the second resolution endorses that the resolutions adopted should be forwarded to UN and other International human rights bodies for seeking co-operation in this regard.
