Bail for women held in poll related violence

The Duty Magistrate Imphal yesterday ordered the release of two women who were arrested on October 11 in connection with pre-poll violence at Ningombam Mayai Leikai under Naoriya Pakhanglakpa Assembly Constituency on bail.
Koijam Memthoibi (52), wife of Deven of Ningombam Mayai Leikai and Soibam Ranjana Devi (52), wife of Hemachandra of Ningombam Makha Leikai were produced before the Duty Magistrate yesterday late in the evening by a team of Singjamei Police along with a prayer for judicial custody remand.
IO of the case submitted that one Sadokpam Ashakumar of Ningombam Awang leikai lodged a complaint to OC Singjamei police station on October 11 at around 7.30 pm stating that a mob of around 60 persons led by Koijam Memthoibi and Soibam Ranjana stormed his residence and foiled a peaceful meeting scheduled earlier in the day.
Ashakumar stated that due permission from Imphal West DC for gathering of around 70 persons and financial assistance were to be extended to various self help group by managing director of 'Chumthang Sanapung', Soraisam Kebi who is also eyeing to contest the forthcoming general Assembly election in Naoriya Pakhanglakpa Assembly Constituency during the programme, the IO submitted.
Further the complaint mentioned that the mob led by the said two women stormed Ashakumar's residence carrying deadly weapons at around 1 pm and started attacking persons who were waiting for the meeting to start.
They also broke the glass wall of his house with stones apart from shouting that no meeting or gathering concerning any candidate other than Soibam Subhaschandra should be held anywhere in Ningombam, the IO added.
The IO further submitted that Koijam Memthoibi and Soibam Ranjana admitted the charges levelled against them on interrogation and prayed the Court to grant judicial custody remand of the duo for smooth investigation of the case.
The defense counsels on the other hand filed a remand objection and prayed the Court to release the women on bail.The Court after hearing the submission of the IO and on perusal of case record, ordered police to release both the women on bail on their execution of Rs 30 thousand PR bond and surety of the same amount.
