Imphal, August 13 2010:
Along with issuing a clarion call to all to inculcate the spirit of patriotism among the younger generation, the All Manipur Students' Union (AMSU) observed Patriots' Day at the centenary hall of DM College of Science here today.
Speaking at the occasion, AMSU president Irengbam Jamesbond, who presided over the function, exhorted the gathering to remember the bravery of our forefathers who fought against the British valiantly to safeguard the independence of Manipur.
He asserted that declaration of August 13 as a general holiday by the Government in schools, colleges and universities, and absence of any lesson on the history of Manipur in the school and college syllabus that could instil a sense of patriotism among the younger generation has led to a situation where the present generation have failed to properly understand the significance of observing Patriots' Day.
This could ultimately result in degrading of Manipuri culture and tradition, he cautioned.
Former AMSU president Leihaothabam Saratchandra Sharma was chief guest of the observance which was also attended another former AMSU president L Gojendro as guest of honour.
In his address, Saratchandra stressed on the need for organising the Patriots' Day observance extensively so as to inculcate the spirit of patriotism to all.
Tributes were paid to the photographs of Jubaraj Tikendrajit and Thangal General at the occasion.
Many resource persons also spoke at the function.
