Senapati, February 09 2021:
The proposed 72 hours inter-State chakka bandh called by the JAC formed against the proposed Diversion of Trans Asian Highway-1 was suspended after a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the Joint Action Committee against the proposed diversion of Kangpokpi Bypass of NH-2 and the district sdministration of Kangpokpi at its district headquarters today.
Earlier, the National Highway Infrastructure Development Agency had sent a letter to the office of the DC, Kangpokpi/CALA Kangpokpi vide No.NHIDCL/RO-Imphal/NH-2/LA/2021/1467 dated February 8, 2021 communicating its decision to drop the proposed Kangpokpi bypass and instead develop the existing carriageway without any further expansion on both ends.
As the bypass is altogether dropped, the question diverting the bypass is no longer valid, the two parties agreed.
Hence, the JAC also agreed to suspend the bandh/chakka jam or any agitation on the National highway immediately.
It was also agreed that the JAC and all stakeholders shall be consulted of any change with regard to the Kangpokpi bypass of NH-2 in the future.
The meeting was attended by Ng Chunthan, convener JAC, M Kennedy, secretary JAC against the proposed diversion of Kangpokpi bypass of NH-2 and Somorjit Salam, IAS, DC, Kangpokpi district.
Stranded vehicles including some tourist buses were reportedly permitted to pass Mao Gate and IT Camp, Hengbung soon after the bandh was suspended, as per reports received from Mao police and Senapati police.
