Imphal, February 09 2016:
MEELAL has taken serious note of penalising fines against the students who speak in their mother tongue in private schools.
Speaking to reporters at their office, MEELAL president Moirangthem Naokhamba said that MEELAL is an organisation which stands for the protection and development of mother tongues of different communities.
As such, MEELAL would stand against banning of speaking in mother tongue in private schools, he said.
Saying that February 21 is observed as the Mother Language Day all over the world, Naokhamba said that MEELAL has taken serious note of giving burden to students in private schools by imposing fines against speaking their own language.
He said that three language system is followed from Class-I to V and two language system from Class VI to X according to the National Curriculum Framework all over the country.
As such, it is questionable why private schools in Manipur have banned speaking mother tongue, Naokhamba said.
To look into the matter, MEELAL would visit different private schools from tomorrow, he said and added that any school which imposes fine against speaking mother tongue would be permanently banned.
He also urged the public to immediately inform MEELAL if any school is found imposing this restriction.
