Lamka, October 08 2011:
A swift out-of-the-box visit to a handful of Government schools here has taken-aback Deputy Commissioner Jacintha Lazarus and her team as they repetitively fall upon irregularities one after other besides experiencing Government teachers' conscious act of insensitivity.
Visiting team's query on the actual number of students always draws roughly half of the number they have on record.
In some instances, the team was greeted by young, active and talkative teachers but they often turned out to be mere proxies.
Almost anything came to naught at the venue of a three days cluster level training of VEC and SMDC held at Muallum wherein the Deputy Commissioner told the attending teachers, "You are bringing shame to the reputation being a teacher" .
As the teachers failed to give any reasonable responses on the queries concerning SMDC funds, mid-day meal, free book and uniforms, Jacintha Lazarus warned them to withhold their salary if they continue to avoid the schools.
She also threatened to recover the equivalent amount from the Headmaster's salary or the MGNREGS fund allocation of the village if mid-day meals are found misappropriated in future.
As a good number of teachers confessed of not attending the school or hiring a proxy, department officials too confronted uneasy question on the logic behind imparting training to them.
Cases of an English teacher who does not understand a word and a single classroom accommodating two classes with two separate blackboards also emerged during the course of the visit.
The visiting team included AC to DC CCpur, Maniram Sharma; ED DRDA CCpur Mannuamching, SDO Singngat, Rachel N Guite, Muallum MDC, Grace Zamnu and ZEO CCPur Joseph Lalrothang.
