Imphal, May 08 2020:
For the women vendors to sell their products hygienically, Imphal Municipal Council (IMC) started cleaning the complex as well as the surrounding areas of a temporary market shed set up for Khwairamband Keithel vendors, today.
Some vendors who do business in the market shed have cleared out their belongings for the IMC to carry out their cleanliness drive effectively.
Heavy machinery like JCB was deployed to remove/carry garbage from the market site.
Speaking to this reporter, Assistant Commissioner (Revenue) of IMC, Kshetrimayum Gyanendro said that the drive was initiated in view of the COVID-19 pandemic so as to provide a safe and hygienic site for the vendors to do business.
Disinfectants were sprayed at a food path leading to the temporary market shed and drain adjacent to it.
Saying that the Principal Secretary and Director of MAHUD will also inspect the prevailing conditions of the market shed, Gyanendro maintained that the holes in the upper portion of the shed will also be fixed for the convenience of the vendors.
IMC has contacted the association of the market shed to inform vendors, especially from far-flung areas to clear out their belongings too, the AC said and continued that repairing of the temporary shed will be initiated after a thorough discussion in the presence of MAHUD Principal Secretary and Director.
In the meantime, secretary of Ima Panthoibi Sana Keithel Temporary Market, Khomdram Joymati opined that leakage of rainwater and piling of waste materials by the vendors are the prime reasons for dirtying the market shed.
Appealing to the State Government and department concerned to repair the drainage system in the periphery of the temporary market, she urged to the fellow vendors to be hygienic and treat the market place as their own homes while doing business.
Regarding a ban on vending, she appealed to the State Government to be clear on its stand as mentioning only three Ima Keithels in the order confused vendors who operate in the Bazar areas.
