Kangpokpi, April 07 2017:
Even as improving highway connectivity is among the top priorities of the new BJP led State Government and even though revamping works have begun in some parts, the Trans-Asian Highway No 1 or National Highway 2 passing through the hilly Kangpokpi and Senapati districts becomes a threat to many commuters and local residents.
As the Imphal-Dimapur road remained unattended for almost a year or two, the condition of the highway deteriorates gradually.
Commuters and travellers along the highways had their share of a nightmarish experience especially during the recent week-long downpour.
The condition of the highway is such that it could be mistaken for a road in the interior areas.
The numerous unreported minor road accidents which occurred on daily basis along the said Asian Highway No 1 presents the sorry picture of the highway.
A heavy loaded truck trapped in a pothole in the middle of the road at Motbung bazar, which indeed disrupted the traffic for almost an hour today is the latest confirmation of the pathetic condition of the National Highway 2 .
Even though singling has been done to revamp the road stretch from Kangpokpi to Sekmai segment, the condition of Kangpokpi DHQs to Senapati DHQs is in the worst form at present having oversize potholes.
Speaking to media persons, BJP Sadar Hills Secretary Organization media-in-charge, Lamminlun Singsit said that the concern shown by the Congress Govt over the past 15 years to the development of Asian Highway No 1 remained unreal.
He alleged that with such second-rated consideration, the previous Congress Government had caused indescribable grievances to the transporters, commuters and the general public.
Singsit however exuded great confidence that the BJP led State Govt under the leadership of CM N Biren would take no time in smoothening the dilapidated highway.
He also urged the state Government to live upto the faith of the people and initiate quick measures to renovate the Asian Highway at the earliest.
Meanwhile, reckless driving along the pathetic National Highway more particularly on the part of escorted tankers and trucks including winger's driver is also another threat to passers-by and other vehicles along the road.
An enraged resident of Kangpokpi DHQs said that the escorted tankers and truck drivers seem assuming themselves as the king of the road and they think as if they were in possession of a license to drive recklessly without any concern for other commuters and passers-by.
It will be wise on the part of the concerned security escort unit commanders and the law enforcing agency to instruct the drivers to emphasize more on safety norm more particularly in public and schools areas along the highway.
