71st Hiroshima Day observed

Observance programme of the 71st Hiroshima Day was organized by Indo Japan Friendship Association Manipur (IJFA) and Mayors for Peace, Imphal Chapter at Manipur Press Club, Majorkhul, Imphal.
Mayor of Imphal Municipal Corporation Soram Sunil graced the programme as the chief guest while president of IJFA W Bhumeswar and retd Headmaster and writer Khurai jam Nimai Charan Singh were the functional president and guest of honour respectively.
Founder secretary of IJFA and Mayors of Peace, Imphal Chapter Ph Nandakumar read out a message and peace declaration sent by the Mayor of Hiroshima, Japan to commemorate the Hiroshima Day in Manipur.
Commenting on organizing the commemoration programme, W Bhumeswar said August 6 is one of the darkest days in the history of mankind.
On this day in 1945, the first atomic bomb was dropped in Hiroshima killing tens of thousands of people.
The consequences of the bombing are still being felt.
The observance programme is to remind people that nuclear weapons are destructive and pose a great threat to mankind.
He added that human beings, regardless of all the differences, share this planet with a common goal to live the only life we have.
To co-exist instead of resorting to threats posed by nuclear weapons, we must value person-to-person relationships and build a nuclear-free world.
IJFA has been working to foster closer ties with Japanese people by introducing certain plans and projects.
However, due to the State Government and Union Government's unresponsiveness, there has not been much success.
Nevertheless, IJFA will continue to fetch help from Japan and bring development in the State.
As part of the programme, prizes of the 29th and 30th children peace drawing competition of Hiroshima and Hiroshima Day 2016 were also distributed.
Hiroshima Day was also observed by Manipur University Nihongon Alumni Association at MU Guest House.
The programme was also attended by Prof HNK Sarma, Vice Chancellor, MU, N Noren Singh, Additional Chief Engineer-I.PWD, Government of India, Prof RK Ranjan Singh, retd CDC Director, MU and Prof H Tombi Singh, former Vice Chancellor, MU as presidium members.
Prizes for the speech competition organised under the theme "Hiroshima Day and Its Relevant to Todays' World" were presented to the winners.
