Imphal, December 04 2012:
Demanding early release of pending scholarship to students, Parents-Teachers' Association lamented that the scholarship amount being paid to the students is incompatible to the modern day requirements.
Speaking to newspersons at Manipur Press Club today, Association secretary Y Basanta said that there are over 80,000 students from nearly 400 Government and private educational institutions who are entitled to receive scholarship.
While the scholarship amount for the academic session 2010-11 have been released for students of about 15 schools the rest are being denied the same facility till date, said the secretary.
Mentioning that under the scholarship programme of department of Minorities and Other Backward Classes (MOBC) students from class I to V are entitled to yearly amount of Rs 250 each, Basanta said that from class VI to VIII each of the students are provided Rs 4000 while the amount increases by Rs 100 for students in classes IX to X .
Referring to a recent MOBC notice (Nov 22) under which a student has to open bank account to receive the incentive, he pointed out that opening a bank account necessitates depositing certain amount which is far more than the scholarship amount.
The expenditure is even more greater for students hailing from distant places where there are no banks, as they are compelled to open bank accounts at towns or cities.
