Drivers assaulted, transport services suspended

After three drivers were assaulted, all transport services along Imphal-Jiribam highway have been suspended.
Meanwhile the All Manipur Road Transport Drivers and Motor Workers Union has condemned the assault on the drivers in the strongest terms.
Three drivers of Force Cruiser jeeps which operate on Imphal-Jiribam highway were assaulted by two individuals who came on a Honda Activa scooter after snatching their vehicle keys at Wahengbam Leikai Jiri parking here at around 4.30 pm today.
The assailants also smashed windscreens of the Force Cruiser jeeps.
The victim drivers have been identified as Sangomsumbam Angousana (35) s/o Md Nasiruddin of Lakhipur-Saparmeina, Assam, Md Allaudin (28) s/o Saraf of Jirighat, Lalpani, Assam and Chanambam Mohon (35) s/o Radhamohon of Lakhipur Tollenkhul, Assam.
As the three vehicles were parked in a row awaiting disembarkment of passengers, the assailants shouted to the drivers whether they (drivers) were not aware that today was a bandh.
The next moment, the duo snatched the keys of their vehicles and physically assaulted them.
In protest against the assault, all passenger services operating on Imphal-Jiribam highway were suspended soon after the incident.
It is said that all passenger services would remain suspended tomorrow too.
Meanwhile, All Manipur Road Transport Drivers and Motor Workers Union general secretary M Anil condemned the act of assaulting drivers without giving any reason.
Maintaining that he did not know about any organization calling bandh on the highway, Anil appealed to all concerned to clarify if any organisation called a bandh on the highway today.
