Imphal, April 01 2016 :
Induction of Inactivated Polio Vaccine (IPV) to Mission Indradhanush (MI) and Routine Immunization (RI) has been launched at Family Welfare Services Directorate today.
A media sensitization workshop on the matter was also held as part of the launching function attended by Health Services Director Dr O Ibomcha as chief guest, Family Welfare Services (FWS) Director Dr K Rajo as president and FWS Joint Director Dr Th Arunkumar as guest of honour.
In his keynote address, State Nodal Officer (Immunization) Dr Th Nandakishore said that Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare launched Mission Indradhanush to immunize all the children below two years of age and pregnant women against preventable diseases on December 25, 2014 .
This mission would further benefit the children with the induction of IPV from today, he said.
Although, polio type-II was last detected in the country in 1999, India has been declared polio type-II free only on September 20 last year, Dr Th Nandakishore said.
Saying that polio can be divided as type-I, II and III, Dr Nandakishore said that the disease can still be detected in India as it is still prevalent in neighbouring countries like Pakistan, Myanmar and Afghanistan.
In his speech, Dr O Ibomcha said that polio type-II is most the dangerous among all other types and it can still attack the children if they are not immunized properly.
He also stressed on the need to ensure proper care in the cold chain (ie transportation of IPV from manufacturing unit to deep fridger and to immunization centres) .
Dr Ibomcha said that ensuring effective immunization of IPVs to the children of interior and hill areas where electricity is not available is a huge challenge to the Government.
