Imphal, June 30 2018:
The ongoing agitation of Manipur University students, teachers and staff against Vice Chancellor Prof Adya Prasad Pandey is no longer confined within the university campus.
For the first time, since the uproar ceased all activities of MU, students, teachers and staff took out a protest rally today from the university's Obelisk Square to Kakwa.
On the way, they were joined by volunteers of different local clubs and Meira Paibi activists.
Meanwhile, five Heads of Departments have tendered their resignation letters in connection with the lingering crisis.
The five HoDs who have tendered their resignation letters are Prof Amar Yumnam of Economics Department, Prof O Inaocha of Computer Science Department, Prof RK Suresh of Adult Education Department, Prof Yasobanta of Linguistics Department and Prof N Nimai of Physics Department.
Notably, five academic deans had already resigned from their respective posts.
The protest rally participated by hundreds of people was jointly organised by MUTA, MUSU and MUSA.
The protesters shouted slogans and carried placards/banners which denounced VC Prof Pandey and demanded his resignation or dismissal.
Imphal West District Police kept a close vigil throughout the course of the rally so as to avert any untoward incident.
Speaking to media persons by the sideline of the protest demonstration, MUTA president I Tomba said that they worked for a joint meeting with the VC since June 4 to resolve the crisis.
The VC was asked to come out with a clarification on allegations made by MUSU.
MUTA then gave an account of the situation to Chief Minister N Biren, Governor Dr Najma Heptulla and the Joint Secretary of HRD Minister who came to Imphal.
The VC came out with a clarification through media much later on June 24.By then, all academic activities including examinations had ceased, and the issue became a State issue.
Subsequently, MUTA decided to support MUSU's agitation, Prof Tomba said.
MUSU's agitation has already completed 30 days and they have been demanding dismissal of the VC citing 15 different charges, he added.
MUSU president Mayanglambam Dayaman expressed strong resentment against the authority's total indifference to the suffering of MU community and students of colleges affiliated to MU and their failure to take up a single concrete step to resolve the crisis.
He reiterated that MUSU's agitation would go on until VC Prof Pandey is dismissed.
On the other hand, MUTA has resolved not to extend any kind of cooperation to the VC and other statutory officers until the existing crisis is resolved.
MUTA adopted a resolution to this effect at an emergency meeting of its executive council held last afternoon.
