WinG condoles the demise of Helam Haokip

Imphal, September 21 2020:
Women in Governance - India (WinG-India) mourned the sudden and untimely demise of its core member Ms Helam Haokip from Manipur on September, 17, 2020 following a brief illness.
Helam was born in Urangpat village in Manipur and held Masters degree in Science.
Since 1998 was actively associated with the social work.
Her active involvement in social work inspired many in her community and she is the first generation of women who voiced against patriarchal norms among the tribal community in Manipur.
She became the first female executive member of Kuki Inpi, Manipur.
She worked as secretary of Integrated Rural Management Association in Urangpat, Manipur.
As a core member of WinG-India, Helam was part of decision- making in the organization and immensely contributed towards it's establishment and advocacy initiatives with great enthusiasm.
She was also associated with the state chapter of WinG Manipur and shaped its mission and vision by empowering rural women and building there leadership.
Helam was a strong, dynamic and deeply committed towards the reformation of traditional practices and customary laws.
Through her determined personality, she could overcome the ethnic barriers among the communities in Manipur and worked for all.
Her special focus on women and children in armed conflict situation as well as efforts to attain sustainable peace in the state earned her respect and credibility in the society.
WinG-India, conceived in 2009, is a national network of women leaders, from marginalized communities across India and working toward promoting leadership and local governance of Dalit women (erstwhile untouchables) and women from the Northeast of India.
WinG-India lost a fellow comrade, friend and a sister.
On this day, WinG India remembers her and deeply mourns the loss and stands in by the bereaved family and friends.
