Imphal, July 21 2014:
A public held yesterday at Keishampat Yumjao Lairembi community hall yesterday under the aegis of the JAC Against the Unnatural Death of Wangkhem Eliza resolved that the Government should enquire into the case and establish the facts and circumstances leading to the death of Eliza within seven days.
On the other hand, a press release issued by the Lamphel P/S OC informed that the dead body of Wangkhem (O) Eliza (31) w/o W Dinachandra of Langol Ningthou Leikai would be disposed off as unclaimed body in accordance to relevant laws in case the same is not claimed by 1 pm tomorrow (July 22) .
Medical reports given both RIMS and Shija Hospital should be examined to find out if any wrong treatment was given to Eliza and the matter should be discussed in the ongoing Assembly session, said another resolution of the meeting.
The third resolution said that doctors found guilty should be awarded befitting punishment.
Eliza gave birth to a child through cesarean section at RIMS.
After child delivery, Eliza was told that both her kidneys were not functioning.
But there was no kidney problem before child delivery according to family members and Eliza was taken to Shija Hospital.
After undergoing treatment for one month and a half at Shija Hospital, Eliza expired.
Eliza's and the JAC have been contending that she died because of laxity on the part of doctors who attended to her.
Addressing the gathering, NIPCO president Sunil Karam said that doctors cannot always save life.
But doctors can definitely protect life from fatal diseases and health problems through timely and careful treatment.
At the same time, one mistake or negligence on the part of doctors can cost a precious life.
RIMS can never become a good hospital if the doctors and medical professionals working there cannot uphold their professional ethics, said Sunil adding that patients should consult doctors in time in every phase of different health problems.
Women Action for Development secretary M Sobita alleged that many patients have died because of negligence on the part of attending doctors.
Many of the patients and their families have varying degrees of grievances against some doctors.
The All Manipur Bar Association and the High Court Bar Association need to look into the issue of negligence by doctors, Sobita said.
On account of the sheer negligence of doctors in Government hospitals, a large number of patients either go to private hospitals or hospitals located outside the State thereby incurring huge expenditures.
More and more people are losing their faith in Government hospitals.
The meeting resolved that necessary action should be initiated against Dr Nabakishore and an enquiry should be conducted according to service conduct rules of medical professionals.
Representatives of Poirei Leimarol Apunba Meira Paibi Lup, Kuki Mothers' Association and DESAM too spoke at the meeting.
