Imphal, December 19 2014 :
Labourers of different private stone crusher units today staged a sit-in-protest demanding wage increment at Pheidinga bazar.
Secretary of the newly formed North Imphal Labour Association, Thiyam Rajen said that proprietors of these stone crushing units have refused to increase their wage from Rs 180 per day.
He said that the proprietors told the labourers that they were free to leave their units if they were not ready to continue their work at Rs 180 per day.
Saying that there are around 200 labourers, who are registered in their association, Rajen said that the proprietors told them that they would hire non-local labourers if they leave their firms.
He said that they work for seven hours from 8 am to 3.30 pm at these stone crushing units.
Maintaining that no labourer would work until their wage is hiked, Rajen said that proprietors must held be responsible for any eventuality if they continue to run their firms with newly hired labourers.
