Imphal, August 19 2014:
A massive rally was held at Tamei headquarters in Tamenglong district demanding posting of doctors at Tamei Primary Health Centre (PHC) today.
Simultaneiously, a 12-hour bandh was also imposed in Tamei sub divisional headquarters by the Zeliangrong Students Union-Tamei Area (ZSU-TA), Tamei Hqs Youth Club, Liangmai Pui Baudi, Tamei Women Front, Tamei Students' Union and Liangmai Katimai Ruangdi (LNKR) from 3 am today.
About 2000 people participated in today's rally at Tamei.
Students from all the schools in the vicinity of the headquarters also participated in the rally.
Shops and offices did not open today and the private and public transports too did not operate in Tamei area for the day.
After the rally, the frontal organisations of Tamei sub division, Tamenglong district have resolved to resort to drastic form of agitation irked by the age-old apathy meted out to the sub division by the state government of Manipur.
The people of the sub division heavily depend on the Primary Health Centre (PHC), Tamei as the sub-health centres have totally non-functional in the large sub division.
Patients rushing to the PHC often go back home as doctors are not in the station, alleged Pougaibou.
According to him, the frontal organisations of the sub division demanded that doctors and staff are posted at the only PHC immediately by the state government.
They also demanded that the PHC should be made round the clock functioning.
Villagers have no means to rush to Imphal or the district headquarters for medical attention, the organisations said, adding, "The proper functioning of the PHC will help ease the peoples' hardship" .
During the rally, the people shouted slogans demanding that the state government immediately send doctors at Tamei PHC.
The rallyists also expressed their anger why the state government continues to ignore the sentiment of the people of Tamei sub division.
For the past three months or so no doctors have been attending the Tamei PHC, according to Pougaibou, convenor of Zeliangrong Students Union-Tamei Area.
He stated that irked by the situation, the people of Tamei have locked the PHC for the past few days.
"We will take up stringent forms of agitation if the state government does not attend our cries," warned Pougaibou.
