Training programme on Classical Freshwater Fish Taxonomy held

A one-day training programme on "National Hands on Training on Classical Freshwater Fish Taxonomy" was held today at the Manipur University (MU) VC Court Hall.
The training programme was jointly organized by the Zoology Department of Manipur University and ICAR-Directorate of Coldwater, Fisheries Research, Bhimtal, Uttarakhand.
The inaugural function was graced by State Fisheries Minister Heikham Dingo; Vice Chancellor of MU, Professor N Lokendra Singh; Professor R Varatharanjan, Professor Ch Sarojnalini Devi and ICAR-DCFR, Bhimtal Director Dr Pramod Kumar Pandey as the presidium members.
Speaking at the function, H Dingo stressed on the need for conducting proper identification and research work while trying to conserve the fish species found in the State.
He further said that the Fisheries Department has been consulting experts and working out plans to conserve indigenous fish varieties being found in the water bodies of the hills and valley.
"Manipur lacks production of fish on a large scale even though the State is a goldmine for biodiversity as the result of being situated in the IndoMyanmar Biodiversity hotspot and blessed with diverse flora and fauna", he added.
The Minister went on to contend that conserving indigenous fish varieties and promoting aquaculture would provide livelihood to many people in the State.
Altogether 25 participants, including from outside the States have participated at the training programme.
