Imphal, July 14 2012:
There is no need to seek the Centre's approval for extension of Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation 1873 in order to enforce Inner Line Permit System (ILPS) in Manipur.
Chief Minister O Ibobi was only acting when he claimed that the Centre's approval was mandatory, stated BJP national secretary Tapir Gao.
Speaking to media persons at the State BJP here this afternoon, Tapir Gao stated that the regulation which was enacted during the British period has never been amended in the Parliament.
Reminding that the regulation was withdrawn from Manipur in 1950 by Himat Singh, the then Commissioner of Manipur, Tapir Gao maintained that there is no need to seek the Centre's consent for re-implementing the same regulation.
He went on to allege that Chief Minister Ibobi was concealing something behind the screen.
He was openly playing deceit with the people of Manipur.
He has the authority to extend Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation 1873 to Manipur, Tapir Gao asserted.
BJP zonal secretary Chandrasekhar Rao noted that Manipur stands only next to Assam in terms of influx from Bangladesh and Myanmar.
At some places, the number of immigrants have outgrown the local people.
Demanding that the Government of Manipur should take up due measures to identify the immigrants, Chandrasekhar said that large number of immigrants have been already listed in the electoral rolls.
Along with identification of immigrants, necessary actions should be initiated for return or deportation of the immigrants to their native places.
Saying that BJP would raise the matter with the Union Home Ministry, Chandrasekhar Rao said that BJP would launch a movement for enforcement of ILPS in Manipur.
