Imphal, June 08 2019:
Condemning the act of destroying the office building of the Anti Drug Joint Committee (ADJC), Kairang, as well as attacking the residences of the committee members by a mob yesterday, the committee has clarified that the death of Md Helim, which is the reason for the situation yesterday was not caused by the committee members.
Speaking to media persons at a location of Imphal West today, ADJC general secretary Md Anwar claimed that even though the deceased Md Helim was detained by the members of the committee for interrogation after he was caught with drugs, the members did not resort to any extreme assault or attack.
He then alleged that Helim, himself, seemed to be in a bad shape at that time and added that he might have succumbed to his injuries after he tried to flee from the spot and tripped, hitting his chest on the ground.
Explaining minutely about the incident, Md Anwar said that before the committee detained Md Helim, its members had caught two drug users at around 9.30 pm of June 6 at Khurai Heikrumakhong and from their disclosure, it was learnt that they had procured the drugs from Helim who lived at Kairang Khumidok Umang Leikai.
He then claimed that when the committee volunteers went to Helim's residence, tried to run on seeing the volunteers but slipped and fell on the cement floor thus losing consciousness.
After Helim regained consciousness, he was brought to PYA ground by the volunteers, Anwar explained, adding that as Helim told them that he was a heart and diabetes patient apart from having BP problems, the volunteers tried to scare him by threatening.
However, the volunteers did not resort to any assault or other attacks, he clarified and informed that based on Helim's disclosure, the volunteers seized 799 SP capsules, 180 WY tablets, 16 strips of N10 tablets and 5 grams of heroin from his residence.
Anwar then stated that Helim, along with the seized items, were taken to Heingang PS but he collapsed and was rushed to Heingang PHC for treatment but sadly perished.
Expressing disappointment at the whole situation, Anwar alleged that taking opportunity of the death, some drug users created a mob and attacked the committee office as well as the residence of president Md Ibohal alias Azimuddin as well as other committee members.
Condemning the act, he informed that a complaint has been lodged at Heingang PS and appealed to the authority concerned to arrest all those involved in the violence.
He further condemned the attack on the reporter of The Echel Express as well as the injury sustained by the SDPO while trying to control the mob and explained that what the ADJC is doing is not for self interest but for bringing a positive change in the society.
On the other hand, the JAC against the brutal killing of Md Abdul Helim has threatened to launch stringent agitation if the culprits involved in the killing of Abdul Helim are not booked within 48 hours, as mentioned in the memorandum submitted by the JAC.
It can be recalled that Abdul Helim, s/o late Md Abdul Majid of Khomidok Umang was found dead at Heingang PHC, a day after he was called out by one Md Anwar of AntiDrug Committee, secretary, Md Ibohal Shah and 15 other individuals from his residence.
