Imphal, August 31 2012:
The Hill Areas Committee (HAC) today deliberated on making 50 Kangpokpi Assembly Constituency a reserved seat for ST.
As of now, Kangpokpi AC is a general seat.
In connection with the proposal, a meeting was held today at old Assembly building with HAC Chairman Chaltonlien Amo in the chair.
The meeting was attended by many MLAs and Ministers who were elected from hill constituencies and they discussed about the possibility of categorising Kangpokpi AC among the seats reserved for Scheduled Tribes.
It was later agreed to collect all relevant documents and information and consult Law Department before another round of meeting is held on the same agenda.
Participants of the meeting noted that the amount of Rs 130 crores set apart by the Government for development of transport infrastructure in hill areas under Special Plan Assistance was not enough.
Highlighting the large territorial size of hill constituencies, they decided to appeal to the Government to increase amount sanctioned for each Assembly segment which now stands at Rs one crore.
Observing that making bank accounts mandatory for drawing old age pension would create lot of problems in many areas of hill districts where there is no banking facility, the MLAs and Minister further decided to urge the Government to allow beneficiaries enjoy pension benefits with or without
bank accounts.
