Imphal, October 30 2016:
Claiming that Ningol Chakkouba is basically an occasion to promote the love between brothers and sisters besides being a main component for social integration, United Committee Manipur (UCM) has today greeted all the ningols (sisters) living in Manipur and to those who stay outside the State.
In a statement, UCM reminded that observation of Ningol Chakkouba started from the reign of King Chandrakirti and continues till today and stated that the occasion was modified from the previous tradition of Piba Chakkouba by the ningols during the time of King Nongda Lairen Pakhangba.
Lamenting that the occasion is misrepresented today with the involvement of mass gambling such as lagao, housie and consumption of alcohol and other intoxicants, the organisation said that it is high time to be aware of the fallouts.
UCM then asked all to give a serious thought to the current trend of lavishing expensive gifts to ningols and maintained that such a trend goes against the intrinsic meaning of the day.
The Committee asked all to revive the good old values of Ningol Chakkouba and prayed for peace to reign in the State.
The organisation has also extended warm greetings on the occasion of Kut.
Remarking that the Kut festival is the biggest pre-harvest festival of many communities, including Kuki, Khongsai, Baite, Paite, Guite, Thadou, Haokip and Mizo communities, UCM wished that the festival bring unity, prosperity, and peace in the society.
UCM has also condoled the demise of social worker Thounaojam Iboyaima.
The organisation said that Iboyaima stood against AFSPA, 1958 and spoke boldly against it when security forces tortured and arbitrarily killed many innocent civilians in the State at one point of time.
