As in other parts of the country, Anti-Leprosy Day was observed today to coincide with the martyrdom of Mahatma Gandhiji in remembrance of the works done by him during his lifetime for the welfare of Leprosy patients at the hall of Leprosy Control Unit of Thoubal District Leprosy Society.
The event was attended by Adhyaksha of Zilla Parishad, Thoubal Md Abdul Latif and Chief Medical Officer of Thoubal Dr Kh Manglem Singh as chief guest and president respectively.
Along with offering floral tributes to the photograph of Gandhiji, a one minute silence was observed as mark of respect to the departed leader.
The main objective of the observance was to spread awareness among the people and encourage them to join hands in eradicating leprosy disease.
Four persons who have been cured from the scourge of Leprosy were also felicitated with gifts at the occasion.
Moreover, two staff of the office of District Leprosy Officer, Thoubal namely H Shyamjai and P Nipamacha Singh (Chowkidar) were awarded in appreciation of their dedication in the field of eradication of leprosy.
The Anti-Leprosy Day was also observed in the premises of Leprosy hospital, Lei-Ingkhol, Chingmeirong today under the aegis of the All Manipur Medical Department Leprosy Employees' Association, informed a release.
On the occasion, free gifts like blankets were distributed hospitalised leprosy patients and to those belonging to below poverty line families.
The observation was attended by retired Health Director Dr Ch Chandramani, Director Health Services Dr Th Suresh and Imphal West District Leprosy Officer Dr H Deveshwor as presidium members, added the release.
Social Volunteers' Association, Manipur and Pourabi Rising Star Club also observed Martyr's Day to mark the 60th death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.
Paying homage to Mahatma Gandhi by offering floral tributes and observing one minute silence, discussion session on his philosophy of non-violence and world peace and observance were the main highlights of the observance function.
