Wild birds rescued

People For Animals (PFA), Thoubal in association with Thoubal District Police rescued a large number of wild birds, including many endangered species, from two persons at Ekop Lake of Tentha Khunou today.
The two persons, who caught the birds using nets for sale, have been identified as Moirangthem Pishak Singh (45) s/o late Ibobi and Maibam Shyam Singh (40) s/o late Rajo.
Both are residents of Tentha Khunjao of Thoubal district.
Parading the arrested persons before media persons, Thoubal CDO O/C and Tentha Police Out Post in-charge Md Daulat Khan said, the duo was arrested and the wild birds they had netted were retrieved during a drive conducted by his CDO Unit and volunteers of PFA Thoubal under the supervision of Thoubal SDPO Lalboi Haokip.
Maintaining that netting of wild birds is an unlawful activity, the OC said that such drives could protect these endangered birds.
He also appealed the general public to take care of these birds instead of adopting the idea of earning money from its sale.
The OC added that the two arrested persons would be handed over to the State Forest Department to initiate action under the Wild Life Protection Act.
Six thembis, six mitngangbis, 16 sparrows, one common coot, one spotted owlet, two lovebirds and one jack snipe and one sand piper were rescued during the drive.
Jack snipe and sand piper are Schedule-IV birds, the O/C said.
One dead mitngangbi and seven dead sparrows were also recovered from their possession, he added.the efforts made by the jail staff, Ministry of Home Affairs awarded meritorious medals to jail staff on Independence Day this year.
