Imphal, September 26 2016:
Normal life has been affected in Chandel district due to the indefinite economic blockade imposed by the Flood Victims Demand Committee, Chandel in protest against the failure of the Government to provide compensation to the flood affected victims of 2015 .
On the first day of the economic blockade, flood affected victims enforced the blockade along the Imphal-Moreh highway section near Thamlapokpi village and district headquarters road near Liwachangning since early morning.
The blockade supporters stopped and frisked all the vehicles coming from Moreh and Imphal side near Thamlapokpi village and near Liwachangning and only allowed them to proceed further after pulling down the goods.
Briefing media persons, Bd Betha, convenor of Flood Victims Demand Committtee, Chandel said that the indefinite economic blockade was imposed along the National Highways connecting the district from mid-night of September 25 in protest against the Government's failure to release the relief fund for providing compensation to the victims of last year's flood.
Despite democratic forms of agitations and several memoranda to the authorities concerned, the Government has a turned deaf ear to the demands of the committee, he lamented.
He further stated that the committee will continue to enforce the economic blockade till the State Government releases the relief fund and provide compensation to the flood victims for the loss of agricultural lands, standing crops, livestocks, etc.
Betha also expressed gratitude to Ex-MLA Bd Behring for his effort in making the State Finance Department grant encashment permission of Rs 4, 29,97500/- as the 1 st instalment of Central share for construction of 1225 houses affected by landslide and flood in the district under IAY recently.
