Imphal, November 25 2012:
Although the Manipur Legislative Assembly has a good library, most MLAs could not reap benefits as they do not keep the habit of reading books at the library, said former MLA Okram Joy.
The MLA was speaking as the chief guest at the 4th Foundation Day celebration of Kamini Devi Memorial Library and THAU Information Centre at THAU ground, Thangmeiband today.
In connection with the celebration, a State level debating competition on the topic, 'The multifaceted activities adopted by various civil societies of Manipur in the name of welfare of the people do more harm than good' was also organised.
Contending that 'knowledge based society' could be achieved through libraries, the MLA expressed concern that the people of Manipur are unable to get the benefits of having libraries as the State is lagging behind in library movement.
Maintaining that the current era is the era debates and discussions, O Joy also mentioned about the importance of debate in a democratic country.
Saying that debates could bring truths into light, the MLA said that it was right to debate on the roles of NGOs and civil society organisations.
Former Chief Minister Radhabinod Koijam informed the gathering that the Kamini Devi Memorial Library has not only good number of books but also an internet cafe.
However, as the library does not have enough number of visitors, the library is yet to achieve its intended objective, he added.
Mayanglambam Sureshkumar of Kakching Khunou Hijam Maning Leikai, Khundrakpam Ranjit of Khangabok Khullakpam Leikai and Sushil Oinam of Chingamathak Pishum Leirak won first, second and third prizes in the debating competition.
