Imphal, June 24 2020:
The Naga Students' Union Chandel has strongly opposed the order of Department of Education (S), on June 20 wherein it directed Private Schools not to collect tuition fees but to pay the salary of teachers and non-teaching staff for the months of April to July.
The Union stated that the directive of the department is beyond imagination and a heavy burden on the schools since majority of the private schools in the district depend on tuition fees to pay teachers' salaries.
Saying that the strength of students in each school varies, some have around 200, some have 300 and just 2 or 3 schools have students in between 400 and 500, the Union urged the authority concerned to first confirm the financial position of the schools in Chandel before imposing such an order.
Moreover, the Union urged the authority to categorise the private schools in two groups, one that has already collected tuition fees in advance up to July and other schools that have not.
The former group can bear the salaries of its employees while the latter may not be in the position to bear the expenditure for salary, it added.
