Wildlife Week concludes

The 60th Wildlife Week observed under the aegis of the Forest Department concluded Itoday at Lamyanba Shanglen, Palace Compound here with Deputy Speaker MK Preshow as the chief guest.
Chief Secretary O Nabakishore and Principal Chief Conservator of Forest (PCCF) Bala Prasad attended the function as president and guest of honour respectively.
Speaking at the occasion, MK Preshow asserted that authorities concerned need to ponder over construction of border fence along Indo-Myanmar as it would seriously affect natural habitat of wild-life and their movement.
"When we were young, our ancestors used to venerate and pray in front of trees before they were cut down.
But after adoption of Christianity, no respect is given to nature.
Even 1000 year old trees are being cut down without any remorse", Preshow stated.
Citing water scarcity at Siroy due to unchecked lumbering, the Deputy Speaker underscored the urgent need to conserve nature and protect environment.
Chief Secretary O Nabakishore highlighted the importance of protecting wildlife in order to maintain ecological balance and promote tourism.
Bala Pradesh said that Sangai was believed to have disappeared totally in 1951 but its population steadily rose to 204 in 2013.This is the fruit of the collective efforts made by Forest Department, public and local clubs.
Later prizes were distributed to winners of spot painting competition, article writing competition and photography competition.
The Wildlife Protection Incentive Award was also presented to 12 people.
Senior Staff Reporter of The Sangai Express Laishram Shamungou bagged the second position in the wildlife photography competition.
Salam Brajakumar of Keibul Lamjao won the first prize while the third prize went to Oinam Johny of Iroishemba Mang Hiden.
N Shyam of the Unique Wildlife Protection Committee, Sekmaijin Thongam; L Gopal of Global Science Club, Khoijuman and Dr Ksh Imokanta of Pole Star Guardians' Association, Thinungei won the first three Wildlife Protection Incentive Awards.
