Gold worth Rs 14 Lacs seized

In continuation of back to back recoveries of contraband, Tengnoupal Battalion of 26 Sector Assam Rifles under the aegis of HQ IGAR (S) caught 0.498 Kg of Gold from a car.
On19 November 2018, based on specific input received from reliable sources regarding smuggling of Gold of Foreign Origin, a White colour Maruti Swift Suzuki moving from Moreh to Imphal with four passengers including driver, was stopped at Permanent Vehicle Check Post, Khudengthabi at around 1500hrs for checking.
On through checking of the passengers and vehicle 0.498 Kgs(03 biscuits) of Gold were found concealed in the roof upholstery of the car.
The apprehendees are identified as Mr Md Abdul Mateen s/o Md Ahamed Hussain, age 35 years, Md Irshad Khan, s/o Md Abdul Salam, age - 19 years, Md Rajaoddin, s/o Md Alaoddin, age- 27 years and Md Indaur Rehaman, s/o Md Jalaluddin, age�15 years.
All apprehendees are resident of Lilong Khunou, Thoubal District, Manipur.
All the apprehendees were taken into custody and handed over to Customs Office, Moreh along with the recovered gold bars .
Tamu-Moreh Route along Asian Highway 1 is the preferred route for international illegal gold traders.
Open and porous border, noticeable price difference between India with Myanmar and perceived better quality of gold of Myanmar vis-a-vis India, are the prime reasons for large scale gold smuggling from the area.
