Girl found dead under mysterious circumstances

A young girl was found dead in a suspicious manner at the bank of a fish pond near Uchiwa Thambalhoubi, Imphal West district under Mayang Imphal police station.
The deceased has been identified as one Wahengbam Ichal (20) d/o late Birakumar of Sekmaijin Khunou, Thoubal district.
The corpse was retrieved after it was closely examined by a police team of Mayang Imphal police station and Manipur Police Forensic Science Laboratory unit in the presence of an Executive Magistrate.
The corpse has been deposited at RIMS mortuary.
Wounds made by strangulation were seen on Ichal's neck.
A polythene rope was also found wrapped around the neck.
It is said that the fish pond belongs to one Chongtham Ranjit (50) of Mayang Imphal Konchak.
Some people first saw a rope at around 8 am today.
On further scanning the area, a female body was found on the edge of the pond.
According to family members, Ichal was living with her mother Ibecha Achoubi at Sekmaijin Khunou Mayai Leikai.
But since around three months back, she was staying with her aunt Okram (O) Tombi (her mother's younger sister) at Sekmaijin Khunou Makha Leikai.
She reportedly left her aunt's home at around 3.30 pm yesterday.
Family members thought that she had eloped and they were awaiting confirmatory news.
Ichal also reportedly told some of her friends before leaving her aunt's home yesterday that she was eloping.
She further confided that the boy she was going to elope with belongs to Mayang Imphal.
However, she did disclose the name and other details of the man.
Ichal was earlier married to a man from Wangkhem but they separated and Ichal was living at her parental home since around one year back.
A case has been registered at Mayang Imphal police station in connection with the suspicious death of Ichal and police have launched due investigation, informed a source.
Taking serious note of the 'murder' a public meeting was held at Sekmaijin Khunou Awang Leikai later in the day and a JAC was formed.
Demanding that the culprit/s be held within 48 hours, the JAC has threatened to impose an indefinite bandh on Mayai Lambi from 6 pm of May 21 in the event of the Government failing to apprehend the culprit/s.
