A "buyers and Sellers' Meet" has been organised for sericulture progressive farmers by the directorate of Sericulture at the Sangaipat Project Management Complex of the directorate today.
As chief guest of the inaugural programme, Principal Secretary (Sericulture) O Nabakishore Singh remarked that the Meet is being organised to facilitate cocoon producers and purchasers meet and share expertise under a common platform.Taking into account encouraging number of cocoon producers/rearers present in the State, he also expressed that the Meet will be able to boost silk production for export.
director (Sericulture) H Ginjamang Simte in his address highlighted that a five-member team of 1000 field operations units are being engaged to promote cocoon production in the spring season under the Manipur Sericulture project Phase-I.Further informing about the involvement of over 55,000 progressive farmers in the sector, the Director mentioned that annual cocoon production in the State is around the 25 metric tonne mark.
Stating that participants in today's Meet were able to provide 5 metric tonne of cocoon, Ginjamang said price of a kilogram of cocoon is fixed at Rs 250 by the Government.
M Manihar Singh of Nongmeibung was presented an award of Rs 2 lakh at the occasion for his indigenously developed machinery to reel and dry cocoons.
Consultant of Japan's IC Net Limited JV Krishna Rao was also present at the inaugural programme.
