Imphal, January 19 2016:
Sky Hospital and Research Centre has successfully conducted an open heart surgery yesterday on a young patient.
The patient is said to be the youngest patient ever admitted to the hospital.
In a press meet today at the hospital, chairman of Sky Hospital Dr Shyamkishore Lairikyengbam said the operation was performed on a five year old boy from Charangpat Maning Leikai of Thoubal district.
He was admitted on January 16 with a large hole in the heart also referred to as congenital heart defect.
Without surgical closure of the hole, the life expectancy of the child is very low, he said.
Dr Krishna Iyer, a famous heart surgeon and also the executive director and HOD, Children and Adult Congenital Heart Surgery of Escort Fortis Heart Institute, New Delhi with a team of specialist surgeons of Sky Hospital successfully conducted the operation on January 18 and the child is recuperating well, Shyamkishore said.

He further said, "Dr Iyer conducted two other surgical operations on two other children from Nungbi Khullen of Ukhrul district and Churachandpur" .
All the three patients are recovering well and they will be discharged within five to seven days, he added.
When asked the life expectancy of these children after the open heart surgery, he said they can lead a normal life.
Dr Iyer expressed that children born with heart defect have limited life expectancy and early diagnosis and treatment is a must.
Children dying at an early age due to lack of such treatment is a loss to the nation.
"We must make sure children get treatment and surgery very early," he added.
Further he said that Escort Fortis Heart Institute will collaborate with Sky hospital to deliver more service in coming years for the underprivileged people of Manipur.
Dr Iyer will be available when necessary in the hospital, added Dr Shyamkishore and said that the surgeon has conducted more than 13,000 such operations.
The youngest among them is an 18 hours old child, he said.
Meanwhile, parents of the five year old boy expressed their gratitude toward Sky hospital for conducting such operations at a much lower rate.
