Karu Kanphit celebrated

Yong Sairel Traditional Fishing festival (Karu Kanphit) of Maring community was celebrated on May 15 and 16 .
The traditional festival was organised by four villages located at Myanmar border, Tengnoupal district namely Yongkhul, Sairel Saisim, Tengkonbung and Sairel Atou.
TA&Hill ADC Chandel executive member Mathew Maring, ADC Chandel member Ch Mesil, ADC Chandel member Kh Morung attended the festival as dignitaries among others.
The villagers go to the forest to gather two special kind of vines which they later crush them thoroughly and drop it in the river.
The whole process is called Yai Thaba in local tongue.
This particular root paralyses the fish and it is strong enough to make the dishes unmovable but not kill it.
Meanwhile, when all fishes are floating as an effect of the root the next morning, the locals will head to the river to catch the fishes which they later cook and eat together.
Speaking to media persons, convenor of the festival M Miring Seiyaona said that the festival has been celebrating since time immemorial by the Maring forefathers adding that people observed this festival every year before.
