Divorcee alleges atrocities by non-local hubby

One Tellem Robita (31) d/o T dhananjoy of Kongba Kshetri Leikai has alleged that her then husband namely Rameshkumar Gupta (47) s/o Duwariwa Prashad of Bihar used to subject her to severe atrocities when they were living together as husband-wife.
Speaking to newspersons at the Keishampat office of FREINDS today, Robita claimed that after marriage in November, 1999 she was not only confined at her husband's rented room in Paona Bazar and subjected to inhumane treatment but Rameshkumar maintained illicit relationship with other women.
It is said that Rameshkumar locked up Robita preventing her from even attending religious events, including Ningol Chakkouba, at her maternal home when they lived together.
Following alleged mental torture and constant sexual abuse, Robita reportedly developed mental problem and underwent treatment at a private clinic in January 2012 during which she also came to know that Rameshkumar used to bring home other women during her absence.
Moreover, shortly after marriage Robita also received a woman's call from Bihar insisting that the caller was Rameshkumar's wife, she said.
Upon returning to the Paona bazar home, Rameshkumar continued to commit atrocities eventually resulting in Robita forced to return to her maternal home in February the same year, she said while adding that three days after separation the husband came and took away couple's three children.
Further contending that Rameshkumar connived with some persons who claiming to be activists of an armed group telephoned her on March 31, 2012 to settle their case.
The UG-pretenders besides informing that Rameshkumar has already remarried another woman also advised Robita to pay certain amount to settle the issue and went away with her ornaments in the presence of family members, she said.
Rather than the issue being settled, Robita said she received a court order on June 29, 2012 about her husband filing for divorce.
Quoting disclosures by the lady caller from Bihar in the earlier days of marriage, Robita alleged that Rameshkumar used to arrange for ladies to entertain representatives from a clock manufacturing unit when they come to Manipur.
Rameshkumar used to work in Capital Watch Co, Paona Bazar, she informed.
Commenting on the matter, FREINDS president Sapamcha Jadumani opined that Robita's case is yet another grim reminder of the hardships Manipuri women would face when they fall into traps of outsiders and lured into marriage.
He also insisted that the case is a wake up call for the people of Manipur, particularly the state Government to implement inner line permit system in the State to not only check influx of non-locals but to avert recurrence of similar cruel fate that befelled upon Robita.
