Imphal, July 16 2021:
The All Zeliangrong Students' Union (Assam, Manipur & Nagaland) appealed to the Lt Gen J P Mathew, AVSM, VSM, GOC, HQ 3 Corps to look into the matter of security in one of the most vulnerable area, the Imphal-Tamenglong road (IT Road) via Kangpokpi DHQs.
AZSU in a statement mentioned that the IT Road is the lifeline of Tadubi AC, Kangpokpi AC, Tamei AC and Tamenglong AC having more than 1.5 lakh people.
Most of the goods including essential commodities and other developmental infrastructures were transported through the road.
Not only goods and essential commodities transportations but public carrier transportations have also been harassed with heavy illegal taxes by anti-social elements who they claimed were underground or overground members of many insurgent groups using sophisticated weapons on a daily basis.
Many innocent passengers including students and transporters were also physically assaulted for not being able to pay the illegal tax and many more kidnapping/killings have taken place in the area over the past many years, it added.
AZSU stated that the recent incident along IT Road at Chalwa village and consequent 'Deed of Agreement' signed by Assam Rifles, CSOs and Police officials was an unwelcome step while adding that many people have been harassed, threatened by various UG groups operating along the road.
It also mentioned that the 44 Assam Rifles, Banglabung post has effectively brought law and order situation along IT road under control and that the inimical elements would try to weaken the security setup along the road stretch to further their own illegal taxation regime.
AZSU on behalf of Zeliangrong community urged the Lt General to look into the matter and take necessary action for the security of innocent citizens of the area.
